Make a Nature JournalMake a Nature Journal

Nature journals are ideal tools for prompting students to document and reflect on schoolyard observations. As ever-changing environments, gardens and habitats naturally spark curiosity and a journal helps to channel this exploration into an organized learning activity. As students record their activities and discoveries, they will begin to recognize patterns and search out explanations for intriguing observations.

There are many ways to create a nature journal. One method is to use an existing spiral bound notebook and attached plastic sandwich bags to the back for collecting plant and insect samples. Journals can also be created using recycled materials, by cutting single-side printed paper in half and then stapling it together along one edge using card stock or cardboard for a cover.

The Growing Ideas Classroom Project on Making Field Journals provides additional ideas on creating more specialized journals. You can use the book creating activity as a springboard for exploring cultures and discussing the social and political changes catalyzed by the advent of each new literary technology (from the creation of moveable type and the printing press to the growth of the Internet). When students spend time creating books from scratch, they are even more inspired to write journal entries.

Journaling activities can be integrated across the curriculum with a special emphasis on science and language arts. Check out the book Keeping a Nature Journal for guidance and specific classroom activity ideas for student involvement.
