Germinating seeds in the classroom can be as easy as adding a bit of moist potting soil to a small paper cup, but you can add an element of fun by making a seed doll. (This activity is adapted from GrowLab: Activities for Growing Minds.)

  • Give each student a paper towel and allow them to moisten it with water using a spray bottle.
  • Sprinkle some easy-to-sprout seeds, such as grass seeds, along one edge and then carefully roll up the paper towel.
  • Cut small holes from the side to represent arms.
  • Add craft eyes and a smile to one end.
  • Find a warm location out of direct sunlight to lay the dolls until the seeds sprout. (If your classroom is very dry, you may need to moisten the paper towel again.)
  • In a few days, your students can play with their seed dolls.
For further exploration, you can unroll the paper towel to view the roots of your new little plants.
